Why early assessment helps
People may minimize alcohol-related problems because work or family responsibilities are still being maintained. But hidden health effects, relationship strain and increasing tolerance can develop gradually.
A psychiatric or addiction assessment can look at drinking pattern, other substances, physical health, sleep, mood and previous attempts to reduce drinking.
Withdrawal needs special caution
If someone has been drinking heavily or regularly for a long time, suddenly stopping alcohol can sometimes produce dangerous withdrawal, including seizures or delirium.
People at risk should not attempt abrupt unsupervised withdrawal. A clinician can advise whether medically supervised withdrawal is needed.
Treatment is individualized
Treatment may include motivational work, counselling or psychotherapy, family support, medicines when appropriate, relapse-prevention planning and treatment of coexisting depression, anxiety or sleep problems.
Frequently asked questions
Does someone have to drink every day to have alcohol use disorder?
No. The pattern of loss of control, consequences and dependence-related features matters more than a simple daily-versus-weekly label.
Is it safe to stop alcohol suddenly?
Not always. People who drink heavily or regularly may need medical advice before stopping because withdrawal can be dangerous.
Can alcohol worsen sexual problems?
Yes. Alcohol can affect desire, erections, ejaculation, mood and relationship functioning, especially with repeated or heavy use.
